Threaded joints probably represent the oldest method of joining piping systems. Like Socket Weld fittings, threaded fittings are mainly used for small pipe diameters (Small Bore Piping); generally for piping whose nominal diameter is NPS 2 or smaller. Threaded fittings or Screwed Fittings perform the same basic functions as butt-weld fittings. Screwed or threaded fittings are normally reserved for installations where the nominal pipe size is 3″ and smaller. Screwed or Threaded fittings are also available in cast iron, malleable iron, or forged steel.
